I’ve had a more difficult time trying to photograph a female cardinal as they seem more reclusive than the male. I find them just as striking as their mate even without all the red plumage.

A Winter Outing

I had a terrible case of cabin fever this morning and felt a hike was long overdue. So after clearing last night’s snowfall from around our home I took a walk up to my favorite pond deep into the woods.

It was so peaceful, so quiet. Maybe the serenity I was feeling was a direct result of the individual parts of the evolving pond environment “working” to be the best for the whole. No competition, no wars between the different species of trees, grass, birds and animals… just unending cooperation in the cycle of life and death. As Dewitt Jones put it, maybe it’s not “eat or be eaten” but  “eat and be eaten.” Quite possibly, nature, of which we are apart, is not something to be feared and conquered but to be embraced, cherished and protected.

Even though I completely blew out the highlights on the right side of the image due to intense side lighting and the wrong exposure, I still like the photograph. There is strength and power behind those eyes.

Black and white cats sure are a challenge to photograph with about 6 stops of dynamic range in their fur.

Consider this...

Think of the Earth as a sacred place. Maybe then we can begin to properly care for it.
