This is a maple leaf I stumbled upon while returning from our road mailbox. It was processed using Nik’s Paper Toner filter and a layer blend of the original and a Fractalius effect.

The final stages of the leaf’s life seems to have been put on hold, at least until the spring melt, unable to be blown about by the wind or allowed to decompose back into the soil.

This leaf was picked up and brought home after a hike in the late fall. It was quite beautiful then as it was almost flawless with bold bright colors. It has since dried and curled though twisted itself into shapes that are quite wondrous. I wanted to photograph it though after many attempts I couldn’t get a look that did it justice.

I believe now I have. I removed the stem which was making a working composition difficult, placed it into a light box and used natural light to take the photograph. Five images were taken, each being focused a little further into the subject and then these five images were merged into one using CombineZP to give a huge depth of field. Fractalius and a couple of Nik filters from within CS2 were used in post processing to create the effect seen.

First Signs of Fall

As it was a rare, warm day without rain, I thought I’d take a hike in the woods. I couldn’t help but notice that once again, the fall colors in the Berkshires are rather dull and muted. It seems the foliage isn’t putting on a display before going into slumber, rejoicing in the season past, but drifting off into sleep with a big sigh. The forest doesn’t look well. The only sign of bright color was this leaf in the middle of the road and I had a feeling its beauty would be short lived before being shattered to pieces by a passing vehicle.
